Command & Conquer (Nintendo 64) Hacking

May 2023 ROM of the Month

Command & Conquer (Nintendo 64) is a port of the Command & Conquer (Tiberium Dawn) which adds isometric 3D graphics and removes cut scenes. The map configuration file uses the same format as the PC version, but the binary map data uses a new encoding and adds a height map. The N64 port also does not include the winter theater and several missions contain simplifications.

The ROM is 32MB, of which about 14MB is empty 0x00 bytes. The ROM uses code and data overlays which are dynamically swapped in. There is a filesystem in the ROM which lists the files, their offset, compression method (if any), and file size. Some files, such as the map .INI and mission briefing .BRF format follow the same format as the PC Command & Conquer. The binary map file .MAP uses new encoding and also has an associated .IMG which is used as a height map for the 3D terrain.
